We chatted with Meaghan Bell-Gregory, founder of Eye Candy Designs Make-up Artistry to get the low down on her wedding business and some great insider tips about how to stay on top of your game in the wedding industry.

How long have you been in the wedding business? “This is my fourth season after taking the leap to leave my old career behind, however I have been doing make-up on and off for 14 years.”

Where are you based and what areas do you serve? “I am based in Toronto but I will go just about anywhere. I charge a small travel fee per/km so Brides from all areas can hire me as long as they are willing to contribute to the travel costs. Most of my Brides are from the GTA or surrounding suburbs.”

Do you offer any additional services to brides? “I offer make- up and hair services for all types of events large and small, as well as picture perfect airbrushing. I have a fantastic team of artists who have worked on celebrities, film, fashion and editorial.”Wedding Business. Eye Candy Design

What kind of budgets do you work with? “I have a set fee, and I believe my fees are very reasonable for my level of experience. The larger the party the better rate it becomes per person. I don’t undersell my services – I charge fairly. I like to take my time applying the perfect Bridal (and Bridemaids, MOB/MOG) make-up, and if this means less people per artist then this is my preference.”

Can you give us an example of a package you offer? “Bridal make-up and Hair packages start at $220 which includes high quality false lashes. Bridesmaids and additional clients run anywhere from $60 – $70 for make-up per person depending on numbers. All enquiries can receive a custom quote depending on the number of people, mothers of the bride/groom, flower girls, etc. Once I get an idea of the group I can give a detailed quote for our team to come take care of you on your special day.”

How do you keep up to date with wedding fashion and trends? “I work in all areas of make-up, all year round, so I am always keeping up to date with make-up trends. I do a fair bit of work in fashion editorial so I am always doing research to showcase the next beauty trend. In fashion it is essential to know the trends, but I find the most important thing with bridal is to not be too trendy. I build a beautiful face, where the bride feels her most gorgeous radiant self. I strive to make sure when she looks back on the pictures in 30 years she will reflect on how stunning she looked on that wonderful day. I deliver to the Bride the look she wants to exude, be it sexy, luminous, glamorous, angelic – it is her vision which dictates the look.”

In your opinion, what is the number one wedding faux-pas? “For me, as a make-up artist I find the first thing a bride see is a price point, and then an image of the artists work. I understand there is a budget and certain limitations there. I recommend every bride does proper research on the artist and look through the portfolio very closely and try to read as many recommendations as possible. If the price is too good to be true it is probably because it is! Be aware of deals that seem too good to be true or half of what the average price is.”

What is one goal you strive for in every wedding? “I strive to help provide a calm and stress free pepping environment. I like to help the Bride remember to enjoy the process, and have fun. Most importantly when she has a look at her reflection in the mirror I want to see pure happiness on her face! My favourite part of my job is the Bridal transformation!”
