Angel’s Wedding Diary #5 – The Proposal Story!

In Angel's Corner

I forgot that I haven’t told you how the proposal went!  While I’m working (or procrastinating…) on other bits of the wedding planning, let me tell you how the proposal happened. I also got Darren to share his point of view!

All the engagement proposal stories that come across my desk are always so romantic, lovely and perfect.  But when I talk more with people, and especially guys, I realize that it’s actually 1) the most stressful event in a guy’s life!  2) ridden with backfires and things not working out as expected!  Our proposal was actually kind of awkward and funny – let me tell you my story of how it happened, and Darren can share his point of view with the inside scoop.

I went ring shopping with my sister in Vancouver months ago and saw this beautiful Chanel ring in the store. It was unique and I just love the white ceramic, and the little diamonds surrounding the whole ring.  I took pics of it, and showed Darren and told him that that’s the ring that I want. Then months later, I went to Paris with my family and Darren, and was shopping there one afternoon with another couple (who I actually met Darren through!) We went to the Chanel store in Paris, and I was just browsing, but then we saw this other style of the Chanel ring which was exclusive to the Paris boutique, a solitaire ring, and I tried it on..and I loved it even more!

So I looked at Darren, and he was acting funny, walking outside for air…but that’s weird because before the trip, he told me that they didn’t have my size and I thought the ring was not purchased! So perhaps we can just get this ring now instead…? I walked out of the store to see what was going on, and Darren told me in a panic…”I thought you loved the original ring…I went through so much planning to buy it, and I actually planned to propose on this bridge in Paris on this trip, I actually have the ring right now in my pocket!”  So I told him “I don’t care about the proposal or the ring, I don’t even care where it happens. We just want to be together and spend our lives together, let’s get engaged wherever we are, with whichever ring!”

Getting engaged is stressful, at least for a guy it is. From picking the ring to planning when, where and how to propose, the pressure is on to make it perfect for you and your fiancé-to-be. Comments Angel made throughout our relationship about wanting our engagement to be unique and special set the tone for what I needed to do.  When it came to choosing the ring, I thought I was lucky because Angel picked out the engagement ring that she wanted.  This was a relief because the other jewelry I bought her on various occasions still lies in her jewelry box with the tags on.  So, for the most significant item I will have ever bought for her, I wanted to make sure she loved it. Now, knowing that she frequently changes her mind about things, I found some other rings that are similar to the one she chose and asked her to take a look at them, simply to make sure she still loves the one she chose.  One of the “comparators” was another Chanel ring, a solitaire ring.  She said she had seen that one online but didn’t like it much.  Decision made!..she still likes the original ring so now I can place a special order to have it shipped to the local store.  The ring arrives a few weeks later – the day before we head off on our big trip to Europe.  Everything is going according to plan.  I have a few places picked out in Paris where I can propose to her.

On the special day, I do my best to hide the ring in my jacket so that I can have it with me when I feel like the moment is right to pop the question.  I am as nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof, not about taking the next step with Angel, but about keeping it a surprise and not letting on that I am going to propose to her that day.  I’m also so excited about getting engaged to her.  Later in the day we come across the Chanel store.  Angel wants to simply go in and look around.  Inside the store she approaches the display case and with one single sentence, she turns my excitement into horror.  “They have the solitaire…and I really like it!”  I couldn’t believe it.

Napolean could have come back from the dead and run down the street at that moment, and I wouldn’t have bothered to look.  After making sure that I bought the ring that she wanted the most, I couldn’t believe she changed her mind.  I went outside to get some fresh air and figure out how to salvage this debacle.  It wasn’t long before Angel came outside and asked what was wrong.  I told her I had the ring in my jacket and made sure I emphasized it was her OLD favorite and not her NEW favorite.  At that moment she turned on her amazing charm and took away all my worries.  She told me, “I don’t care about the proposal or the ring, I don’t even care where it happens.  I just want us to be together and spend our lives together, let’s get engaged wherever we are, with whichever ring!”

Within minutes, we were having such a good laugh about the whole situation.  I proposed to Angel that night in Paris, with a ring that wasn’t the one we would keep and in a way that wasn’t at all like I had envisioned it to be. An engagement would never be planned out to happen like ours, however having been through it, I wouldn’t have wanted it to be any other way.  It was as unique and as special as I ever could have imagined.
